Everybody is waiting for Season 4 of “My Hero Academia(僕のヒーローアカデミア)”!
And I received another question about the kanji name s of my hero characters, thank you so much!
Please talk about the meanings of all Todoroki’s family members.
OK! Todoroki’s family members are his Dad, Mom, Big Brother#1, Big Sister, Big Brother#2, and Shoto. I already wrote about “Shoto Todoroki”, so this time I talk about only other members’ first names.
Enji 炎司 (Father): Endeavour
Endeavour’s real first name is Enji (炎司). The first kanji 炎 means “Flame” and the second one 司 contains the meaning of “Rule” and “Govern”.
He rules the flame! I think it suits his quirk!
However, when Japanese people hear the word “enji”, the first word come up in their head is “園児 (enji)”. 園児 means…”a kindergartener”!! So, I don’t think many people name the pronunciation to their son in real life. Ha ha ha.
Rei 冷 (Mother)
Shoto’s mother is Rei. The kanji 冷 means “Cold”! Yes, that’s it! I don’t know about her quirk exactly, but I bet she has something similar that Shoto has.
“Rei” sounds natural as a Japanese girl’s first name (It could be a boy’s name.) and it exists in real life. However, usually people use different kanji that has better meanings!
Touya 燈矢 (Big Brother #1)
Touya (Tohya, Toya) is the first child in this Todoroki family! I don’t talk about any details of the story here, but a lot of things seem to be going on around him….
Well, the first kanji 燈 is the old version of the common kanji today “灯”. It means “the small fire that illuminates the surroundings”.
Then the second kanji 矢 (ya) means “Arrow”.
I have no idea why his name has an “arrow”. But Something-“ya” sounds common as a Japanese boy’s name.
Fuyumi 冬美 (Big Sister)
Shoto’s big sister’s first name is Fuyumi. The first kanji 冬 means “Winter” and the second one 美 means “Beauty”.
Something-“美 (mi)” is very common Japanese girl’s name in real life.
Winter beauty…I guess her quirk is a something-cold like her mom’s.
Natsuo 夏雄 (Big Brother #2)
OK, last one is Shoto’s second big brother Natsuo! The first kanji 夏 means “Summer” and the second one 雄 means “Male”.
So, his name is like…”Summer Boy”.
Something-“o” also sounds common as a Japanese boy’s name, by the way.
Done! That’s all of the Todoroki family members!

If you want to know the meanings of any Japanese kanji that you don’t see English subs for in a particular animation or live action movie, tell me “Name of the Show”, “Season and Episode #” and “the Exact Moment (Minute: Second) if it’s available”!
If it’s just Japanese kanji that you see around you, like a shop sign or a tattoo, you can send me the photo as long as you are allowed to take picture of it.
I can’t promise to reply to everyone but I’ll try my best!
