Most of the time, every episode of TV shows have a subtitle. The popular Japanese animation “Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma” has one too. But how many viewers noticed the yellow sign of that has a special reason?
Japanese Culture behind the Subtitles of “Shokugeki no Soma”
It’s a yellow vertical rectangle with red line. And you see the subtitle is handwritten with a thick black marker.
Actually, this is the typical image of Japanese traditional diner’s menu on the wall. I couldn’t find the exact image from my resource, but this is the closest one.
海鮮丼(kaisendon: Sashimi Bowl) is 600yen…how nice! Theirs are white and hanging on the rope. Also they look like written with brush.
Soma’s family business is diner “ゆきひら(Yukihira)”. That’s why, they are using this image for its subtitles.
By the way, I show some menu form Japanese traditional diner like Yukihira. One of the most popular menu is Teisyoku(定食). Teisyoku is set menu that usually contains main dish, rice and soup.
The picture above is Karaage-Teisyoku. Karaage(唐揚げ) is Japanese deep fried dish. Chicken is popular. Then the one down below is Yakizakana-Teisyoku. Yakizakana(焼き魚) is grilled fish. Man, I miss it! I’m super fish lover but it’s so hard to find fish that I like in USA.
If you want to know the meanings of any Japanese kanji that you don’t see English subs for in a particular animation or live action movie, tell me “Name of the Show”, “Season and Episode #” and “the Exact Moment (Minute: Second)”! I can’t promise to reply to everyone but I’ll try my best!
