I’ve already talked about some other characters’ kanji names. Please check out the list on the page above. (*’▽’)/

Aizawa Shota (相澤 消太) is the homeroom teacher of the main class “1-A” in the popular Anime show “My Hero Academia (僕のヒーローアカデミア)”. His hero name is Eraser Head.

Meanings of “Aizawa Shota” in Japanese Kanji

“Aizawa Shota” looks like “相澤 消太” in Japanese kanji. 相澤 is one of the common Japanese last names in real life. So, is it nothing to do with his quirk? Wait a minute! The word Aizawa contains the same sound as an “EYE(ai)” at least. Most likely that is the reason why author picked this last name for him.

Also, Shota(Shouta) is a common boy’s name today in Japan. However, his kanji is very unusual!! At least I’ve never seen Shota with this Shou(消). The first kanji of his name 消 means “Erase”!(*’▽’) Then, 太 means “Thick / Bold” and it seems to be just a 止め字(tomeji: End Character) for boy’s name.

Well, there is no “Head” in his kanji name.(‘ω’)ノ But his name fits his quirk well and it sounds natural as a Japanese boy’s name.

Shouta or Shota? What’s the difference?

Personally, I prefer spelling his first name Shouta instead of Shota in order to make the clear difference between Shouta(しょうた: it sounds like “show-ta”) and Shota(ショタ: it sounds like “shot-a”).

Either way you may pronounce them “Sh-oh-ta”. However, in Japanese language, there is a word shota(sh-o-ta), which means “cute under aged boys”, and that word usually suggest the adults who are sexually interested in those little boys.((+_+)) Mr.Aizawa’s first name is NOT shota. He is SHOUTA, I say!

Anyway, thank you for the question again!

If you want to know the meanings of any Japanese kanji that you don’t see English subs for in a particular animation or live action movie, tell me “Name of the Show”, “Season and Episode #” and “the Exact Moment (Minute: Second) if it’s available”!

If it’s just Japanese kanji that you see around you, like a shop sign or a tattoo, you can send me the photo as long as you are allowed to take picture of it.

I can’t promise to reply to everyone but I’ll try my best!
